Which Moisturiser Is Right for Your Skin? Enzyme vs Peptide

Which Moisturiser Is Right for Your Skin? Enzyme vs Peptide

Standing in front of two moisturisers trying to work out which one is yours is a surprisingly stressful little moment. They both say gentle. They both say hydrating. They both look lovely. And if your skin is sensitive, choosing wrong does not just mean a wasted purchase, it means a week of congestion or tightness you then have to undo.

So let us make this simple. Alluring Minerals makes two moisturisers, and they are not two versions of the same idea. They do genuinely different jobs, for genuinely different skin. Once you know which job your skin needs doing, the choice takes about thirty seconds.

First, work out what your skin is actually doing

Before you compare products, spend an hour finding out what you are working with. Cleanse with something gentle, pat dry, and then leave your face completely alone for an hour. No serum, no cream, nothing.

Then look. If your whole face feels tight and looks a little dull, you are dry or dehydrated. If there is shine coming through across your forehead, nose and chin while your cheeks feel fine, you are combination. If the shine is everywhere, you are oily. If nothing much has happened at all, lucky you, you are normal and either moisturiser will treat you kindly.

This one hour test is worth more than any amount of reading, because skin changes. The skin you had at thirty is not the skin you have at forty five, and the answer you get in a Queensland February is not the answer you get in July.

The Glowing Enzyme Moisturiser: for skin that congests

The Glowing Enzyme Moisturiser is the lighter of the two and the one that actively keeps things clear.

It is built around an enzyme and salicylic acid blend, which works quietly through the day to dissolve dead skin buildup so pores stay clear rather than clogged. The texture absorbs almost immediately with no greasy film, and it has a soft citrus aroma from Lime, Orange and Bergamot.

Choose this one if: your skin is combination or oily, you get congestion around your nose and chin, you break out under makeup, or you have always found richer creams sit heavily and make things worse. It is also the better choice if you live somewhere humid and a heavier cream simply feels like too much on your face by ten in the morning.

One important note: this one is meant to stay away from the eye area, because those actives are too much for skin that thin. Pair it with the Nourishing Eye Cream rather than taking it up to the orbital bone.

If congestion is your main story, it also sits beautifully alongside the Balancing Vitamin B Serum, which brings 5% niacinamide to calm redness and regulate oil.

The Rejuvenating Peptide Moisturiser: for skin that has lost firmness

The Rejuvenating Peptide Moisturiser is doing something entirely different. This one is about structure and cushion rather than clarity.

It uses Hydrolysed Rice Protein as a vegan peptide to support collagen production, Hyaluronic Acid for plumping hydration that lasts, and Co Enzyme Q10 for resilience and smoothness. The base is nourishing oils, macadamia, sweet almond, sunflower and rosehip, so it feels richer than the enzyme one while still absorbing rather than sitting.

Choose this one if: your skin is dry, mature, or has started to feel less bouncy than it used to. If you are noticing fine lines, a loss of firmness along the jaw, or that your face drinks up whatever you apply and still feels tight an hour later, this is your moisturiser.

It is also, and this matters for reactive skin, a gentler route to anti-ageing benefits than retinol. Peptides tend not to bring the redness, flaking and adjustment period that retinoids do, which makes them a kinder option for a face that has been through enough already. If you are curious about the retinol side of things, our Enriching Vitamin A Serum is there when you are ready, but the peptide moisturiser asks far less of your skin.

Will either of them break me out?

This is the objection worth addressing head on, because it is the reason a lot of women with reactive skin under-moisturise, which then makes everything worse.

Skipping moisturiser does not calm oily or congested skin. It does the opposite. Skin that is stripped and dehydrated produces more oil to compensate, and that overproduction is a far more common cause of breakouts than the cream itself. The fix is not less moisture, it is the right texture.

If you are congestion-prone, the enzyme formula is the safer bet because its actives are working against buildup rather than adding to it. If you are dry and reactive, the peptide formula is unlikely to congest you because your skin is not producing the oil that clogs in the first place. Choosing by texture and by what your skin is doing, rather than by which one sounds most luxurious, is the whole trick.

Whichever you choose, cleanse properly first. A Purifying Enzyme Cleanser removes the day without stripping, and a moisturiser applied over a clean, slightly damp face absorbs far better than one applied over residue.

Can I just use both?

Yes, and quite a few of our customers do. It is a completely reasonable way to handle skin that is doing two different things.

The common pattern is the enzyme moisturiser in the morning, when you want something light under makeup and want the actives working through the day, and the peptide moisturiser at night, when your skin has time to make use of the richer base without anything sitting over the top. Combination skin often likes this arrangement enormously.

The other pattern is seasonal. Enzyme through a humid Australian summer, peptide through a dry winter when the heating is on and your face feels tight by lunchtime. Your skin is allowed to change its mind, and so are you.

If you would rather have the pieces chosen for you, the Combination Skin Pack builds a routine around the enzyme side, and the Anti-Ageing Skincare Bundle builds one around the peptide side. Our full skincare collection is there if you want to see how everything fits together, and our guide to a gentle skincare routine for sensitive skin walks through the order of application.

What to do about the layer underneath

One more thing worth knowing, because it changes the answer for a lot of people. Dehydration and dryness are not the same thing. Dry skin lacks oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water, and it happens to oily faces just as often as dry ones.

If your skin is oily and yet somehow still feels tight, you are probably dehydrated rather than dry, and the answer is not a richer cream. It is water underneath a light one. The Youthful Hyaluronic Acid goes on first, the Glowing Enzyme Moisturiser goes over the top to hold it there, and the tightness usually resolves within a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which moisturiser is right for my skin type?

Cleanse, pat dry, and leave your skin bare for an hour. Tight and dull all over means dry, so choose the peptide formula. Shine through the T-zone with comfortable cheeks means combination, and the enzyme formula suits better. Shine everywhere means oily, and the enzyme formula again. Repeat the test seasonally, because skin genuinely changes.

Will a moisturiser clog my pores or cause breakouts?

The right texture will not. Congestion usually comes from a cream that is too rich for the skin using it, or from skipping moisturiser altogether and triggering oil overproduction. If you are breakout-prone, choose the lightweight enzyme formula, which contains actives that work against buildup rather than contributing to it.

Does oily skin need moisturiser?

Yes, and skipping it tends to make oiliness worse. When skin is stripped of moisture it compensates by producing more oil, which is a very common cause of both shine and breakouts. Oily skin needs a light, fast-absorbing moisturiser rather than no moisturiser.

Are peptides good for sensitive skin?

They are one of the gentlest ways to get anti-ageing benefit. Unlike retinoids, peptides do not usually cause redness, flaking or a difficult adjustment period, so they suit reactive skin and compromised barriers well. That is why our peptide moisturiser suits mature skin that cannot tolerate stronger actives.

Can you use two different moisturisers, one morning and one night?

Absolutely, and it is a sensible approach for combination skin. Many people use the lighter enzyme moisturiser in the morning under makeup, and the richer peptide moisturiser at night. Others switch seasonally, using the lighter one through humid summers and the richer one through dry winters.

Is the peptide moisturiser suitable if I have a nut allergy?

The Rejuvenating Peptide Moisturiser contains sweet almond oil and macadamia seed oil, so it is not the right choice if you have a tree nut allergy. The Glowing Enzyme Moisturiser is the better option in that case. If you are ever unsure about an ingredient, do email us and we will check the full list with you before you order.

A gentle place to start

You do not need to get this perfect on the first go. You need to get it roughly right, use it consistently for a few weeks, and pay attention to what your face tells you.

If your skin congests, start with the Glowing Enzyme Moisturiser. If it has lost its bounce, start with the Rejuvenating Peptide Moisturiser. And if you would rather not decide alone, the Skin Quiz takes about a minute and will point you to the one your skin is asking for.
