Is Face Oil Good for Sensitive Skin?

Is Face Oil Good for Sensitive Skin?

If your skin has a habit of reacting to things, the idea of pressing oil into it can feel a bit like tempting fate. Oil sounds heavy. It sounds like breakouts. And if you have spent years being careful with every new product, it is completely fair to wonder whether this is one step too far.

Here is the reassuring answer. For a lot of sensitive skin, a well chosen face oil is one of the gentlest things you can use. The right oil has no foaming agents, very few ingredients, and nothing that needs to "work" aggressively. It simply sits alongside your own skin oils and helps them do their job. The trick is knowing whether your skin is one that wants it, and choosing an oil that suits it.

Short on time? The Skincare for Dry and Dehydrated Skin collection is this whole article in one place, with both of our face oils sitting beside the serums and moisturisers they pair with.

Why Sensitive Skin Often Loves a Good Oil

Sensitive skin very often comes down to a barrier that is a little thinner or a little leakier than it would like to be. Water escapes more easily, irritants get in more easily, and the result is that familiar tight, stingy, easily flushed feeling.

Your barrier is held together partly by natural lipids, the skin's own oils. A face oil does not magically rebuild them, but a gentle one can help seal in moisture and soften the surface so your skin is not working quite so hard. That is why many women with dry, sensitive skin notice they feel more comfortable within a few days of adding one.

The Australian climate plays a part here too. Air conditioning in summer, heaters in winter, dry westerly winds and plenty of sun all pull moisture out of skin. A few drops of oil at the end of your routine can be the difference between skin that feels tight by 3pm and skin that stays comfortable.

When a Face Oil Might Not Be Right for You

It would not be honest to say every skin needs one, so here is where we would gently suggest holding off.

  • If your skin is very oily and already comfortable. You may simply not need it, and that is perfectly fine.
  • If you are in the middle of an active flare. When skin is red, hot and reacting to everything, the kindest plan is to strip your routine right back and introduce nothing new until it settles.
  • If you have a known nut allergy. Some botanical oils are pressed from nuts, so always read the ingredient list and check with your doctor if you are unsure.

If none of those sound like you, an oil is well worth trying.

What to Look For in a Face Oil for Sensitive Skin

You do not need a chemistry degree to choose well. A few simple markers go a long way.

A short ingredient list. Fewer ingredients means fewer things that could disagree with you, and it makes it much easier to work out what is going on if something does.

Jojoba oil near the top. Jojoba is technically a liquid wax and is remarkably similar to the oil your skin makes naturally. It tends to be well tolerated, even on combination skin, and absorbs without that slick feeling.

Antioxidants like Vitamin E. These help protect skin from everyday environmental stress, which matters a great deal under the Australian sun.

No synthetic fragrance. Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for reactive skin. If you are also sensitive to it, our guide to makeup for fragrance allergies is a helpful read.

Luminous Kiss or Age-Defy Elixir: Which One Suits You?

We make two face oils, and they are designed for quite different jobs. Both are made in Australia, cruelty free, and both are built on jojoba and Vitamin E. Where they differ is what they bring on top of that.

Luminous Kiss, for glow and balance

Luminous Kiss Luxe Face Oil blends Australian-sourced jojoba with walnut oil and natural Vitamin E. It hydrates and softens, but it also helps balance oil flow, which makes it a lovely choice if you are dry in some places and a bit shiny in others.

It has one playful extra: a whisper of gold mica that leaves a soft, light-reflecting sheen. It is not glitter, more of a lit-from-within look, which makes it beautiful worn on its own on a no-makeup day.

Choose Luminous Kiss if your skin is:

  • Dry, dehydrated or looking a little dull
  • Combination and in need of balance
  • Craving a dewy glow under or instead of makeup

Just note that it contains walnut oil, so it is one to skip if you have a tree nut allergy.

Age-Defy Elixir, for nourishment and firmness

Age-Defy Elixir is the richer, more restorative of the two. Alongside jojoba and Vitamin E, it features seabuckthorn berry, which is naturally packed with vitamins, and gotu kola, a botanical traditionally used to support skin's collagen and firmness.

It is a quieter, more nourishing oil with no shimmer, designed to leave skin supple and comforted rather than glowy.

Choose Age-Defy Elixir if your skin is:

  • Dry, mature or feeling a little less firm than it used to
  • Showing fine lines or texture you would like to soften
  • In need of deep nourishment, especially in cooler months

Still torn?

A simple rule of thumb: if you want your skin to look more radiant, choose Luminous Kiss. If you want your skin to feel more nourished and supported, choose Age-Defy Elixir. Some women use Luminous Kiss in the morning for glow and Age-Defy at night for repair, and that works beautifully too.

How to Introduce a Face Oil Without Upsetting Your Skin

Sensitive skin likes things introduced slowly. Here is the gentle way to do it.

Patch test first. Apply a drop behind your ear or along your jawline for a few evenings in a row. If there is no redness, itching or bumps, you are good to go.

Start with fewer drops than you think. Two drops is plenty for your whole face. Warm them between your fingertips and press them in rather than rubbing.

Apply to slightly damp skin. Oil does its best work sealing in moisture that is already there. Straight after cleansing or after a hydrating serum like Youthful Hyaluronic Acid is ideal.

Put it in the right place in your routine. For most women, the order is cleanser, serum, oil, then moisturiser. If your skin is very dry, you can also press a drop over your Rejuvenating Peptide Moisturiser at night to lock everything in.

Give it two weeks. Your skin needs a little time to show you how it feels. If you notice congestion, drop back to every second night.

Will Face Oil Affect My Makeup?

It can actually help it. A tiny amount of oil under makeup gives foundation something smooth to glide over, which is particularly lovely on dry or mature skin where powder can cling to flaky patches.

The key is to let it absorb for a few minutes before you apply anything on top. If you wear the Liquid Mineral Foundation, your finish will look softer and more luminous. You can even mix a drop of Luminous Kiss into a little Mineral Foundation Powder to create your own glowing liquid base.

We go into more detail in our guide to using face oil with mineral makeup, and if your skin has been feeling fragile lately, how to repair your skin barrier and still wear makeup every day is a good companion read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is face oil good for sensitive skin?

For many people, yes. A simple, fragrance free face oil can help seal in moisture and support a stressed skin barrier, which is often at the heart of sensitivity. The key is choosing a short ingredient list, patch testing first, and introducing it slowly.

Can face oil cause breakouts?

It can on some skin, particularly if the oil is very heavy or you use too much. Lighter oils like jojoba, which closely mimics your skin's own sebum, are generally well tolerated even by combination skin. Start with two drops every second night and increase only if your skin is happy.

Should I use face oil before or after moisturiser?

Most people apply oil after serum and before moisturiser, so the moisturiser helps hold everything in. If your skin is very dry, pressing a drop over your moisturiser at night works well too. There is no strict rule, so see what your skin prefers.

Can I use face oil every day?

Yes. Both Luminous Kiss and Age-Defy Elixir are gentle enough for daily use, morning or night. In the Australian summer you might prefer to use it only at night, then bring it into your morning routine as the weather cools.

Can I wear face oil under mineral foundation?

Absolutely. Let it absorb for a few minutes first, then apply foundation as usual. It gives a softer, more hydrated finish and helps stop powder settling into dry patches.

A Gentle Place to Start

Your skin does not need a complicated routine to feel cared for. Sometimes a few drops of the right oil, pressed in with warm hands at the end of the day, is exactly the kindness it has been asking for.

If you would like our suggestion, start with Luminous Kiss for glow and balance, or Age-Defy Elixir for deeper nourishment. And if you would like to see everything that pairs with them, the Skincare for Dry and Dehydrated Skin collection brings it all together. We are always happy to help you choose if you would rather just ask.
